Rafael Malik Cruz is one of the most intriguing defensive prospects in the 2017 NFL Draft. The UCLA product brings versatility and versatility is key for a linebacker group that will come together as one in Houston. When given the opportunity, Malik Cruz knows how to do it all.
Signed as a free agent by Chiefs free agency, Cruz played some linebacker in college, but he also played strong safety late in his career. He was also a full-time nickel back for the Rams during his three-year career but had some stints at defensive end in 2011 and 2012.
In 2013, he was drafted by the Broncos as a rookie linebacker, but was also used primarily a defensive back coming out of college at UCLA. In 2014, this transition was complete as he moved from defender to safety from 2014-2015.
As a senior in 2015, Cruz was another safety that saw playing time. In this role, the former Bruin started every game and posted 12 career tackles and one defensive stop. His versatility on defense made it all the more appealing. When paired with Houston’s pass rusher, the versatile Cruz is one of the most complete linebackers in the draft.
